Food Waste Sustainability Initiative
Every Last Leaf
Kanbe’s uses as much produce as we can but sometimes we, too, have waste.
We quickly realized our Healthy Corner Store was just scratching the surface on the amount of impact Kanbe’s Markets could have. Our Recycling and Food Composting program allows us to maintain an extremely sustainable business model for not only us, but our stores and local farmers as well.
- We offer our spoiled food to local farmers for composting in their fields each week
- We recycle all plastic and cardboard food containers, eliminating tons from going into our landfills
We are dedicated to recycling 100% of the packaging that comes with our fresh produce. We work with volunteers to stack plastic and cardboard food containers so we can deliver them to our recycling facility.
Food composting is a wonderful way to avoid hundreds of pounds of food going into our landfills. Every Thursday, we deliver a load of the food past its prime to one of our working farm partners. They can either feed their animals with the leftovers or till it into their fields to continue to build upon nutritious soil.
Not only is this beneficial for farmers, it’s beneficial for nature and the community at a grander scale. When we compost, that nutrient-rich soil has the ability to re-enhance old, tired out fields, reversing our footprint. See how our partnership with Missouri Organics has begun to make a difference with the community.
